Hypothyroidism Treatment in Guelph

Dr. Matt Gowan, ND

If you’re dealing with fatigue, brain fog, weight changes, hair thinning, dry skin, constipation, cold intolerance, or you just feel “off,” it may be worth taking a closer look at your thyroid.

At Guelph Naturopathic Medical Clinic, we help patients get clarity with a thorough thyroid assessment and a step-by-step plan designed around your body and your results — not guesswork.

Do you feel like your labs are “normal”… but you don’t feel normal?

Thyroid symptoms can overlap with many other issues. It’s common to hear “Your TSH is fine.”…yet symptoms continue.

That’s because the thyroid doesn’t work in isolation. Your symptoms may reflect:

  • Autoimmune thyroid patterns (Hashimoto’s)

  • Nutrient depletion (iron/ferritin, B12, vitamin D, selenium, zinc)

  • Blood sugar or insulin resistance

  • Stress physiology and poor sleep

  • Gut inflammation or absorption issues

  • Medication or supplement interactions

Our goal is to identify what’s driving your symptoms and focus on the changes most likely to help.

A more thorough thyroid assessment

When appropriate, we can arrange comprehensive blood work to better understand what’s happening, such as:

  • TSH

  • Free T4

  • Free T3 (when clinically indicated)

  • Thyroid antibodies (TPO and Tg) to evaluate autoimmunity

  • Key nutritional markers that influence thyroid function

  • Metabolic markers when relevant (cholesterol, glucose/insulin patterns, etc.)

You’ll leave with a plan that makes sense — and a clear explanation of what your results mean.

Our approach: supportive, evidence-informed, and personalized

You won’t get a generic supplement list.

Thyroid care at our clinic typically focuses on:

  • Nutrition strategies that support energy, metabolism, and inflammation balance

  • Correcting key deficiencies (only when identified)

  • Sleep and stress regulation (often a major missing link)

  • Gut support to improve absorption and reduce immune stress

  • A realistic plan you can actually stick with

We aim for meaningful improvement without over-complicating things.

When thyroid medication is appropriate — and when it isn’t

Sometimes thyroid medication is the right tool. But many people do best when we first address the underlying drivers that can worsen thyroid function or mimic thyroid symptoms.

When medication is considered, it’s done carefully — and only when the clinical picture supports it.

Desiccated thyroid vs Synthroid: what’s the difference?

If thyroid hormone ever becomes appropriate, you deserve a clear explanation.

Synthroid / levothyroxine (T4-only)

  • A synthetic form of T4, the storage form of thyroid hormone

  • Your body must convert T4 into T3, the more active form

Desiccated thyroid

  • Derived from porcine thyroid and contains both T4 and T3

  • Some patients report feeling better on it, especially if conversion from T4 → T3 is a concern

  • Because T3 acts more quickly, dose adjustments require thoughtful monitoring

Important: There is no single “best” thyroid medication for everyone. The best choice depends on symptoms, labs, medical history, and safety factors — and it should be monitored properly.

In our clinic, thyroid hormone is typically a last choice — after addressing root causes and when clearly indicated.

This matters because some patients want a careful, professional discussion about options beyond “one-size-fits-all.”

Can my Naturopathic Doctor prescribe thyroid homones?

In Ontario, not all Naturopathic Doctors have prescribing rights. To prescribe medications, a Registrant must complete additional College-approved training in Therapeutic Prescribing and successfully pass a comprehensive examination.

Matt Gowan, ND has completed this additional training and examination and meets the College of Naturopaths of Ontario Standard of Practice for Prescribing.

Within the regulated scope permitted to Naturopathic Doctors in Ontario, he is authorized to prescribe certain medications — including desiccated thyroid hormone preparations when clinically appropriate.

Desiccated thyroid is a natural thyroid preparation that contains both T4 and T3 hormones. In contrast, synthetic levothyroxine (e.g., Synthroid) contains T4 only, which the body must convert into T3.

Medication is considered carefully and typically only after underlying contributing factors have been properly assessed.
